Contents Page Evaluation

The contents page of my foundation production was my faviourate point to my work, this is because of the colour that i edited in the images posing as the background, although there is again, alot to critise.
This image shows that the contrasts between the font and the background image do not work well together at all, this is because the colours on the background image clash completely and the font is not bold enough to stand out. This was due to poor planning and also poor research.

I feel that this particular part of my production does follow the accepted magazines conventions, I belive that the way the title, 'Contents' stays the same in all three of my documents is logical in the magazine world because the images do nt comprimise the view and readability, whereas some more successful magazine have the flexibility to cover up part of the title of change the font for different issues of their magazine because the public have accepted them into society and don't need reasuring of the different magazines. So because of these reasons i think my production follows all the normal and known magazine conventions.

My production is effective in the way that it has been based on a simular magazine, 'Whitelines', I mean this by realising what parts of a snowboarding magazine was important, for example the obvous factors which instantly let the concumser know what the intended audience of this magazine is, i managed to convey this by using images like the neck of a guitar and a image of the French Alps mountain range. This was beaming connotations of wintersport and music which i think was a crusial part of my magazine task.

This website is the Whitelines homepage, I think it is relevant because i used this for my research to determine what was needed to create a convincing magazine product.

Intended Audience

I wanted my foundation production to be appealing to te younger market because i based this magazine on two things very popular with most people around my age. So my intended audience age group would be between the ages of 14 and 30.

Audience Feedback

The feedback was very important because i asked three people in my intended age group who are intrested in both snowboarding and music. This is relevent because depending on the feedback i get, I can determine who effective my product is.

Poppy Kessell - 16

"I like the colour edit on the background image because it makes the magazine look more like a professional magazine, because if you just used a normal image it would look like you didn't know about magazines"

Ashley Evans - 16

"I think the best bit is how you made the side images stack up like their falling, this makes it look more of a pleasure magazine not corporate"

Ben Hutton - 27

"I think the contents page looks good because it has images from both snowboarding and music backgrounds which informs the reader what to expect"

Final Double Page Spread Evaluation

My double page spread i feel did not live up to my expectation through fault of my own, i feel that it hasnt turned out the way i would of liked it to because i didnt organise my time in the best way to give myself maximum potential. However i do think that there are also good points to the peice. For example...One of the good points to this design i think would be the motion picture centring the whole double page spread. I think this is one of the strong points as i found when i looked through both music magazines and snowboarding magazines they tend to use the sort of style you would find in a family scrap book, much like the idea of using different lettering from different magazines to form one font. I also noticed that most snowboarding magazines used the motion picture idea but from a better angle facing directly to the right hand side of the jumper. I attempted this by mixing the two previous ideas combined. As a whole i feel the method went well by using the photo frame with the pin holding it up but you cant really see me doing the jump as the day of which it was taken had flat light so it was more diffucult to edit in a sunny day sky.

This is the kind of thing i was trying to achieve in my flick book effect method, although this one is done from a different angle so you can see the whole trick, same as the trick i did however the angle changes along with the direction.

THIS WAS SCANNED FROM WHITLINES MAGAZINE

As for the main purpose of the page being top boarding tracks of 2010, i used a consistand font throughout the magazine layout with a size 11 white font with a shadow at 150 degree angle. This worked well as it made the magazine look more consistant and professional but at the same time it kept it from being too boring. I also used an image as a banner with the same font in the corner saying 'Official Ratings' as i found on most music countdown websites and programmes all used this to attract viewers or readers.

Although there is no hiding the fact that the main theme of this orange is very boring and it doesnt have alot going for it, i think this because unlike the contents and the front cover it hasnt got a main image in the background.

This part of my magazine production does follow the normal convensions of media in a way that it keeps to a house style, in this case orange, but in comparision to the rest of the project i feel this was a dissapointment.
This is effective in the 'flick book' style iimage but unlike the front cover and the contents page this uses a single solid colour as a background. If i was to re do the entire project, I woild replace this normal background for one of a related image in a high contrast. Another option I could have taken is to enlarge the flick book images, but I refrained from this because of fear it would destort the images pixles.

Audience Feedback
Poppy Kessell - 16
"I don't think this is as appealing as the other pages but i like the way the images in the middle replicate the movement of a video. Also it's good as the title and house style are still the same in this part of the magazine"
Ashley Evans - 16
"The best thing on this page is the arrangement of the images in the centre of the page"
Ben Hutton - 27
"I think the best part of the magazine is the moving images, but i still think that this page would be better with a busy background. However the video we shot looks good cut into still images"

Final Front Cover Evaluation

I feel that my front cover turned out quite well as i have managed to keep a contrast with white text and the black trees of th main image, i edited the colour on the main image so that the trees would have a better contrast as they were light green in the origional copy.

I feel that the good points to my blog are the methods thatr i saw being used in other magazines that arein production, such as the rule of thirds demonstrated in this cover. I found this used on other magazines like Vouge, Total Film and Lucky. Two of which are Conde Nast, however Total Film is from another producer.

This is the 3 thirds that are demonstrated on my own cover.

This was the rule of thirds research i did during the time i looked at what content and methods i should include in my foundation production. This issue of 'Vouge' uses the rule in a verticle way to highlight Beyonce's face and either side they have included the information that is included in this months issue.

If i was to produce anoth magazine I would change the content nowi have first hand experience, I would change it in ways like, including more information on a page which is demonstrated in 'Vouge' and other magazines. As i used a winter theme of snowboarding after a recent trip i would also study more snowboarding magazines like 'Whitelines' magazine and 'Document Snowboard' magazine for the sort of content that i hav'nt included in my final product. These other improvments would be my title, i feel that the font and visability are okay in my magazine but i also know that by pasteing part of an image over the title or even the banner at the top of my page could have also fitted in at the top nearer the masthead.

This example of image covering part of the masthead is prime as the 'Vibe' edition has Chris Brown's head covering the title, where as my masthead is completely clear and visable, this would suggest the the editors of 'Vibe' are more confident in their magazines popularity as it isnt easy to read for a simple passer by.

Overall i feel that my magazine front cover turned out okay however i also feel that i could have done alot more to boost my grade and quality of the cover if i had done alot more research and if i had noticed enough of the research i did. This would have resulted in a image over the title and also a lot more text around the bottom of the cover as it seems very bare.

Front Page Evaluation

On my front page i used a main image of a slope looking up at the Chamrousse snowpark. I chose this a suitable image as i used video of myself and chopped it up into picture form to create a sort of flickbook affect. This was a method i chose so that it would give the reader of 'Music' magazine a sort of understanding of what the Indie Grab looks like when sliced into seperate images.

I feel that this sequence would of been better if i had taken the video from a direct side angle as that would have enabled the reader to see the entire jump and landing easily, however i think that having the last image ithout any being in the frame work well as it gives off the impression that the frame is completly finished.
Here is the video of which i took the frames from...

The video was shot in Chamrousse, France.

As a hole i think that my final front cover turned out very well, it has followed the conventions of normal magazines and the indistury. I know this because i have studied in detail the magazines created and published by Whitelines, I have used their methods in places like, the images are edited and i played with the conventions of lighting.
I think that it is effective in the way that I have included more than one theme on my project, the two themes being, Snowboarding and Music. This has worked well because music is a very big part of the sport and the sport is a personal hobby.
Audience Feedback
Poppy Kessell - 16
This is definatly the best part of the magazine because I think the images and the fonts work really well, one of the main features I like is that the text antwhere on the page is extremely easy to read and understand.
Ashley Evans - 16
I really like the way that the background contrasts against the origional image.
Ben Hutton - 27
I think the postioning of the whole peice of work is good because none of the front cover content is comprimised.

Photoshop Images

As i use a PC operating system on my home computer i used a programme called Adobe Photoshop 7, i used this to edit photos from a recent snowboarding trip. I edited the images in many different ways, one was i nhanced the colours, for example i made the snow whiter and the blue skies a lighter blue, this gave an impression of an incresed drop in tempreture through the use of colour association. This was in hope of creating better image weather. I also changed enhanced the colours on my snowboard by making the already pink brand name even brighter. I also croppd most of the pictures as i took them in a wide frame knowing that you can take away images with computer tools, however you cant add it on. This enabled me to take more images in different frames. Using this programme also allowed me to convert a video in to still image caption of me snowboarding and jumoing over a jump from the side of the ramp.
